Educational Facility
EANM Basic Learning Course on PET and PET/CT in Oncology
Goals
Starting with physical principles, biodistribution of FDG and patient preparation the main goal of the course is to demonstrate the clinical value of FDG PET/CT in oncology. In contrast to the previous PET course more space is left to general knowledge of the disease including epidemiology, diagnosis, strength and weakness of other modalities than PET, treatment and the question why the clinician needs PET/CT for decision making. The PET/CT revision group tried to provide educational high quality PET/CT images where the advantage of the fused images is clearly demonstrated. Furthermore a new series of case studies including the full PET and CT data set is provided on the latest software from the companies producing PET/CT systems.
The educational objective of the new PET/CT course is not only to enable the attendee to interpret PET/CT images but also to discuss with the referring clinician why PET/CT is important for his/her treatment strategy.
To reach this goal it is also necessary to refresh the knowledge in cross sectional anatomy. Therefore for the first time also three presentations of principles in cross sectional anatomy (head and neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvis) are included in the course. In addition to the routinely used tracer FDG an overview of tracers beyond FDG is given.
At the end of the course the attendees will have the possibility to evaluate their knowledge in FDG PET/CT in oncology via a multiple choice test and via practical questions after viewing interesting cases.

Target Group
The basic course is aimed at participants, who have no or only a limited experience in the use of PET/CT. The course is designed for physicians (nuclear medicine, radiology, radiation oncology, oncologists, industry, etc.) who work in the field of oncology and either in a place where PET/CT is expected to be installed or who start to be involved in PET/CT cancer imaging in an interdisciplinary environment. The course provides lectures on PET/CT methodology and basic clinical applications of multimodal PET/CT imaging. The basic Course consists of theoretical and practical modules.

During the first day of the course, PET/CT methodology (instrumentation, radiopharmaceuticals, basic imaging protocols) is presented as well as cross sectional anatomy of thorax and pelvis and clinical PET/CT indications (lung cancer, digestive tract, and gynaecological tumours). Integral part of day 1 and 2 of the basic course are case studies for all presented tumour entities. Workstations are available to the participants to go through prepared cases.

The second day focuses on cross sectional anatomy (head & neck) and clinical PET/CT indications (Head & neck, thyroid, lymphoma, melanoma) accompanied by cases studies of the tumour entities.

At each course instructors will cover the presentations in “classroom style” in the lecture room. There will also be ample time for participants to view case studies in 4 viewing rooms, equipped with state of the art HERMES Hybrid multipurpose viewing stations as well as with workstations by all three major manufacturers of PET/CT equipment GE, Philips and Siemens.
