“Daddy, I am not allowed to eat that sandwich! Because then the bread man will visit Rob, and everything will go wrong”. A 7-years old boy corrects his father, who is at the point of giving his son a sandwich, although the boy is not allowed to eat prior to his scheduled FDG-PET scan.
Dutch Nuclear Physician, Ronald van Rheenen, also known as the Photo Doctor, knows many more of these success stories thanks to his Visual Patient Education Material by which (young) children truly are enabled to contribute to their own healthcare process. His picture books and YouTube videos provide information regarding basic medical knowledge to children in a clear and accessible way. At the same time, the stories provide a sense of adventure, which generally reduces a lot of the initial fear surrounding medical examinations.
